Kitchen Sink Pocket Orchestra

Come to the Allan Brooks Nature Centre for our Evening Arts pop-up performance by the Kitchen Sink Pocket Orchestra. Take in the beauty of the natural world while listening to the sounds of music. Gates open at 6:30 pm, the performance will begin at 7:00 pm and will be comprised of two 45-minute-long sets with a 15-minute intermission. The concert will end at approximately 8:45 pm. Guests will be seated on the Grasslands Theatre benches or may bring their own lawn chair or blankets/cushions to sit on. Please check-in when you arrive. Admission is by CASH donation with a suggested amount of $10 per person.

The Kitchen Sink Pocket Orchestra is a mixed string and wind ensemble designed to introduce orchestral instruments in accessible and non-traditional settings. Their diverse repertoire appeals to audiences of all ages and includes arrangements of much-loved orchestral works, mashups of traditional folk and fiddle favourites alongside recognizable tunes from more contemporary artists including Lady Gaga, Simon and Garfunkel and Metallica. There is something for everyone on this program – that includes everything and the Kitchen Sink!

BC Wildlife Park “The Grasslands Biome”

The BC Wildlife Park is coming to Allan Brooks Nature Centre on Wednesday, July 13th! Their park educators will provide information on the grassland biome and the animals that live there. The audience will meet wildlife up-close and have the opportunity to ask questions. Some of these grassland creatures include the burrowing owl, great basin gopher snake, and more. We’ll start the evening at 6:00pm, so please arrive 10-15 minutes early in order to get checked in and find a seat on our benches. The event will run from 6-7pm and pre-registration for tickets is required! The cost is $15 for adults, $6 for kids ages 4-17, free for kids 3 and under. (There is no need to register kids 3 and under).

Please feel free to bring blankets for the benches, or your own camp chairs!

The Bug Guys

Come to the Allan Brooks Nature Centre on Wednesday, July 6th for an evening with The Bug Guys! Stu will present a variety of live, exotic animals including slithering, creeping, and crawling critters of all kinds. If you are crazy for snakes, turtles, birds and bugs, you won’t want to miss it! We’ll start the evening at 6:00pm with a show and tell presentation, which will include information about each of the species along with fun and interesting facts! The event will run from 6-8pm, pre-registration is required, and space is limited to 96 guests. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 4-17, free for kids 3 and under. (There is no need to register kids 3 and under). In addition, the Interpretive Centre and Grasslands Trail will be open in the evening.

The Raptors 2022

The Raptors are coming! Allan Brooks Nature Centre is thrilled to present The Raptors, featuring a live demonstration of a wide range of native and non-native raptor species including owls, hawks, and vultures. The Raptors is an organization dedicated to inspiring conservation and protecting wildlife species. Demos include the raptors showing off their amazing flight skills as their handlers narrate and engage with visitors, discussing raptor ecology and conservation actions.  Meet these majestic birds and learn what we can do to help them thrive in our natural world! The Raptors will be onsite from August 25th– September 1st, for daily flight demonstrations in a group setting, and up-close and personal encountersThe Raptors travel all the way from their home in Duncan BC to come to the Okanagan, so don’t miss the chance to connect with them at the Allan Brooks Nature Centre.

OSO Pocket Orchestra in the Grasslands

Come to the Allan Brooks Nature Centre for our Evening Arts pop-up performance by the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra Vintage Brass Trio. Take in the beauty of the natural world while listening to the sounds of music. Gates open at 6:30 pm, the performance will begin at 7:00 pm until approximately 8:00 pm. Guests will be seated on the Grasslands Theatre benches or bring your own lawn chair. Walk the Grasslands Trail and view the exhibits in the Interpretive Centre before the event. Pre-registration is required. Please check-in when you arrive. Water and Okanagan Ice Pops available for purchase. This event is FREE but donations are appreciated.

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra’s brass players bring over 100 years of combined professional experience to the stage in a program that will blow you away! Brass instruments are traditionally used to honour our heroes and in joyful celebrations. Join the Vintage Brass Trio as they share a program designed to herald our collective achievements and inspire your love of life. The trio’s repertoire features traditional classical favourites including music from Beethoven, Handel and Bach as well as contemporary Canadian works, and even some highlights from Hollywood.

*** This event is limited to 75 people, allowing for social distancing in the Grasslands Theatre. Covid masks are recommended for guests who enter the Interpretive Centre.

An Educational Event with Dr. Bernard Roitberg

Join us on Thursday, June 24 from 6:30 – 7:30pm for our first 2021 educational opportunity exclusively for volunteers and members of Allan Brooks Nature Centre. Dr. Bernard Roitberg, a world renowned entomologist, will be presenting about bees that are native to BC and the Okanagan as well as discussing how certain bees can be used as proxy “birds” when studying bird behaviour. Dinner Under the Stars Auction Fundraiser

The Allan Brooks Nature Centre presents the third annual Dinner Under the Stars auction fundraiser. Guests are invited to place a bid on any of the five private starlit dinners, featuring Vernon’s finest chefs including four course dinners, wine pairings, live entertainment, and a shuttle service to and from the Nature Centre, for one of the most memorable Okanagan experiences in nature.

The online auction will open on Friday June 4th at 9am and close on Sunday June 6th at 8pm. The winning bidders will then attend the dinner with up to 8 friends and family, for an intimate evening at one of the most breathtaking locations in Vernon. 2021 Dinner Under the Stars participating restaurants include:

Proceeds from Dinner Under the Stars supports the future of the Allan Brooks Nature Centre. Our mandate is to “promote the enjoyment of nature and increasing awareness of habitat conservation through environmental education and nature-related activities in the Okanagan region. We are thankful that our dinners are Covid-friendly so that we can continue to provide outstanding experiences in nature, and also support our efforts to deliver quality programming and provide guests of all ages a connection to nature.
