Meet the People Behind the Allan Brooks Nature Centre

The Allan Brooks Nature Centre is supported by a dedicated team of staff who are passionate about environmental education, conservation, and connecting people with the natural world.

From educational programs and visitor services to habitat stewardship, events, and community outreach, our team works together to create meaningful experiences for visitors of all ages.

As a community-supported nonprofit organization, the Centre relies on the dedication of staff, volunteers, and Board members who all play an important role in helping the Centre grow and serve the community.

Stacey Davidson  |  Executive Lead

Stacey provides overall leadership for the Allan Brooks Nature Centre, guiding strategic direction, organizational development, staff and volunteer leadership, and long-term sustainability. She is responsible for advancing community engagement, strengthening volunteer capacity, and leading the Centre’s fundraising and growth initiatives.

After nearly nine years on the Board of Directors, Stacey stepped into the Executive Lead role to support the Centre through a period of transition and growth. During her time on the Board, she contributed leadership in governance, organizational development, and human resources strategy, helping to strengthen the organization’s foundation and long-term direction. Her leadership continues to focus on strengthening that foundation while positioning the Centre for long-term impact in environmental education and community engagement.

Stacey is also a community leader, HR consultant, and founder of Virtual Job Search Coach, a Vernon-based career consulting and human resources advisory practice. Through her work, she supports businesses and professionals across British Columbia with recruitment strategy, leadership development, and career transition support.

A strong advocate for community engagement and environmental stewardship, Stacey is passionate about creating meaningful connections between people and the natural world through the work of the Allan Brooks Nature Centre.

Cheryl Hood  |  Executive Director

Cheryl has been a dedicated member of the Allan Brooks Nature Centre team for over six years, providing leadership in the day-to-day operations of the Centre. As Executive Director, she oversees operational functions that support program delivery, visitor services, and the overall on-site experience.

Cheryl joined the Centre just weeks before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, navigating one of the most challenging periods in the organization’s history. During this time, she played a key role in maintaining continuity of operations and supporting the Centre through a period of significant uncertainty.

With more than 20 years of experience in management, administration, and project coordination, Cheryl brings a practical, hands-on approach to her work. Her background includes managing budgets, coordinating vendors and logistics, and supporting the operational needs of both non-profit and community-based organizations.

Cheryl is also the creator of Okanagan Okie, the Centre’s official mascot. A charming yellow-bellied marmot with a larger-than-life personality, Okie has become a recognizable and engaging ambassador for the Centre—helping connect children and families to the wildlife and stories of the Okanagan in a fun and memorable way.
Through her work, Cheryl contributes to maintaining a well-run and welcoming environment that supports the Centre’s programs and visitor experience.

Calista Foisy  |  Education Programs Lead

Calista holds a degree in Biology with a focus in Ecology and Environmental Biology, bringing a science-minded approach to the programming at ABNC.

In her role at ABNC, Calista is responsible for leading educational programming, primarily for youth but extending to all ages and demographics. She has found passion within her role being able to spark interest and passion in our natural world for the next generation. She enjoys being able to teach all ages new things about the environment, and being able to communicate high level scientific concepts to the general public.

At the Centre, you may find Calista leading field trips, summer camps or other public event tours. She is always happy to answer any questions or have a chat about our ecosystems!

David Lilly  |  Programs Coordinator

David brings a diverse background in education, sustainability, and operations to his role at the Allan Brooks Nature Centre. With over 40 years of experience spanning leadership in small businesses, alternative education, and program development, he plays a key role in supporting the Centre’s operations, programming, and visitor experience.

David holds a Master’s degree in Sustainable Design and has a long-standing passion for environmental education and engagement. His work has included designing and delivering innovative programs, workshops, and learning tools that make sustainability accessible and engaging for a wide range of audiences, including individuals with diverse learning needs.

His career includes senior-level roles in operations and administration, where he has led organizational improvements, developed strategic partnerships, and supported growth through effective program and marketing initiatives. He has also built and operated his own creative businesses, delivering hands-on workshops in stained glass, conservation, and design.

Originally from the UK, David’s connection to nature has been a lifelong influence, including volunteer work with national parks and conservation organizations. He and his husband relocated to British Columbia to further immerse themselves in the natural environment and contribute to a community that values conservation and environmental stewardship.

Teri Tarchuk  |  Visitor Services Administrator

Teri is the familiar, welcoming presence for many guests returning to the Centre. Having rejoined the team multiple times over the years, she brings a strong understanding of the visitor experience and a genuine connection to the community.

In her role, Teri is often the first point of contact for visitors, providing a friendly and informative introduction to the Centre, its programs, and the surrounding natural environment. She supports front desk operations, admissions, gift shop services, and general administration, while also assisting with events, memberships, and day-to-day coordination.

Teri is well known for her approachable nature and ability to make visitors feel welcome and comfortable. Whether she is greeting guests, answering questions, or helping families plan their visit, she plays an important role in creating a positive and memorable experience for everyone who comes through the Centre.

Okanagan Okie  |  Official Mascot & Grasslands Ambassador

Okanagan Okie is the Allan Brooks Nature Centre’s official mascot and a proud ambassador for the unique ecosystems of the Okanagan — especially our rare and endangered grasslands.

Okie loves meeting visitors, exploring the trails, and helping children learn about the plants and animals that call the Okanagan home. You’ll often find Okie at special events, summer camps, and community programs, reminding everyone that nature is something to explore, respect, and protect.

When Okie isn’t visiting with guests, he’s busy keeping an eye on the grasslands, watching for meadowlarks, counting butterflies, and making sure everyone stays on the trail to help protect sensitive habitats.

Okie’s Favourite Things:

  • Favourite snack: Saskatoon berries and clover
