Saturday June 1: Bats of the Vernon Area & Bat Count

6:30 pm - 8 pm at Allan Brooks Nature Centre, then off-site for a bat count.

An evening for anyone interested in learning more about bats. Join us for a one hour introduction on bat biology, behaviour, and diversity, followed by a field trip to a site where we will do an evening bat count (near Ellison Provincial Park). The bat count will begin at ~9 pm. This evening will be led by BC Community Bat Program Okanagan Coordinator, Paula Rodriguez de la Vega.

What to bring:

· Dress for spending the evening outside. It can get chilly!

· Lawn chair or something to sit on.

· Paper and pencil OR download a ‘clicker counter’ app on your smartphone.

Saturday June 22: Composting for Beginners

Learn the basics of food scrap and garden waste composting. Knowing this skill will help you reduce waste at home while improving your soil with organic matter.

You’ll be looking at various composting methods and their pros and cons, composting best practices, best inputs and you’ll have all of your burning questions answered.

By the end of the class you will have the confidence to get yourself a bin and get going at home and live happily ever after in waste-free bliss.

This workshop will be led by Keli Westgate. Keli is a Certified Permaculture Designer and works for Spa Hills Compost, the region’s only commercial food scrap compost company.

She has been experimenting with compost for over 7 years and will share her enthusiasm for waste reduction, the Soil-Food-Web, Earth Repair and Edible Landscaping.

She is also an instructor at Okanagan College and is on the Board of Directors of the Sustainable Environment Network Society, a local non-profit dedicated to environmental education.

Thursday July 11: Journey Towards Zero Waste

Join Shayne Meechan, executive director of Green Okanagan, for a discussion on adapting to a low waste lifestyle. Providing a local Okanagan perspective on zero- waste, Shayne will share her journey, including breaking down the 5 R’s of a zero-waste lifestyle (i.e. refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot/compost) in an approachable way, and sharing simple and affordable solutions anyone can implement. Shayne believes zero waste living is not a zero-sum game, there are small changes we can all make that will add-up to a big difference in the amount of waste we produce and the overall sustainability of our planet. Workshop description: Cleaning can be a task but finding the right cleaner for the job doesn’t have to be. Shayne has rounded up her tried and true DIYs that are eco-friendly, economical, and low-waste! She’ll walk you through making two natural all-purpose cleaners, all ingredients will be provided, please bring along two clean spray bottles (consider upcycling empty spraybottles you have at home) or containers to take your cleaner home.
