Perched atop the grasslands overlooking Vernon, Allan Brooks Nature Centre is a charitable environmental education centre dedicated to connecting people of all ages with the natural world through hands-on learning, conservation awareness, and immersive nature experiences.
Since opening in 2000, the Centre has grown from a former Upper Air Weather Station into one of the Okanagan’s leading destinations for environmental education, outdoor exploration, and conservation learning.
Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, native grassland trails, discovery spaces, educational programming, scenic viewpoints, and seasonal experiences that highlight the region’s remarkable ecosystems and biodiversity.
The Okanagan is home to some of the most unique and endangered ecosystems in Canada. Native grasslands, wetlands, and dry forest ecosystems throughout the region provide critical habitat for wildlife, pollinators, reptiles, birds, and plant species found nowhere else in the country.
Through environmental education, conservation awareness, and meaningful nature experiences, Allan Brooks Nature Centre helps inspire future generations to understand, appreciate, and protect these remarkable landscapes.
the legacy
Major Allan Brooks (1869–1946) was a renowned Canadian naturalist, wildlife artist, and ornithologist whose work helped shape the understanding of birds and wildlife across North America.
Living in the Okanagan during the early 1900s, Brooks was deeply inspired by the region’s diverse landscapes, grasslands, and birdlife — many of which continue to inspire the mission of Allan Brooks Nature Centre today. His legacy lives on through the Centre’s commitment to environmental education, conservation awareness, and connecting people with the natural world.
