Allan Brooks Nature Centre (ABNC) is bringing the classic ground hog day celebration to the Okanagan Valley and to the province of British Columbia. While Groundhog Day is not new and will forever more be immortalized in a movie by the same name, there is no record of Groundhog Day celebrations taking place in the province of BC. Cheryl Hood, Centre Manager of ABNC says, “Its time for new traditions and celebrations now more than ever before, and ABNC is eager to showcase one of our local furry friends, Okanagan Okie the Yellow-bellied Marmot”.
It’s true that Okie is a marmot but did you know that groundhogs are a type of marmot? It’s also true is that marmots and groundhogs hibernate in the winter so they won’t actually be seen until March or April but, our friend, Okanagan Okie is special and he knows he has a job to do so he’ll be ready and waiting to provide you with the famous proclamation.
If he emerges from his burrow on this day and sees his shadow, he will retreat to his den and winter will continue for another 6 weeks. If he does not see his shadow spring will arrive early.
Join us at ABNC on February 2, 2022 @ 10:00am for the Inaugural Groundhog Day Celebration.
A bonfire and hot chocolate will be offered after Okie makes his prediction.
